Suggested Course Selection for Various Career Interests

"Today you need to think of yourself as an entrepreneur at the helm of at least one living, growing start-up venture ... your career."

A degree in Biology is very flexible and so can be customized largely to meet your specific needs.  Below we list some guidelines and links for those you interested in health-related, as well as for those of you interested in non-medical biology areas.   Remember that your departmental advisor can help you to choose within these lists as to which will best meet your specific career goals.

Pre-health Professions

Generic Pre-health majors:

Biology majors planning a career in medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or other pre-professional fields should follow the recommended curriculum for biology majors.

A year of physics, Calculus I, and one or more semesters of genetics and cell biology are strongly recommended for pre-health professional students.

Biology Pre-Med / Pre-Vet:

Physical Therapy:  ST210, PH114/115, Human Phys. or Animal Phys (BLY436)., & Microbiology (BLY314)

Thinking about graduate school...

For student planning to pursue graduate education in the sciences, you should consider PH 114/115, MA 125 and ST210 as the choices for courses within general biology requirements. You should consult with graduate programs of interest to pre-requisite courses specific to those programs. You may well be able to work them into your undergraduate curriculum while here at South.
