Body Composition Laboratory

About the Lab

The Exercise and Nutrition Research Group (ENRG) Body Composition Laboratory contains various methods of measuring body composition. The lab is capable of measuring body water through bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), whole body circumference values via Fit3D, and body density through underwater weighing (and, soon, through air displacement plethysmography aka BodPod). The lab is also equipped with a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) machine for three-compartment analysis of body composition (fat mass, lean mass, and bone mass). These various testing methods can be combined to provide in-depth body composition analysis including a highly-accurate 4-compartment model which determines fat mass, body water, protein, and bone mineral content.
