'Adrift in Macao' Opens Theatre USA Season
Posted on September 18, 2017
The comical musical “Adrift in Macao,” the first production of Theatre USA’s 2017-2018 season, will open at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.
Set in the early 1950s on the Chinese island of Macao, the loving parody of film noir movies such as “Casablanca” features an instantly recognizable cast of characters, along with song, dance, puns and physical gags. Casino owner Rick Shaw, immediately attracted to newly arrived blonde beauty Lureena, hires her as a singer, much to the displeasure of his current entertainer, Corinna. Playing the piano is the ever-smiling Tempura. Then, the arrival of American Mitch, who is searching for the mysterious McGuffin, who framed him for murder in the United States, kicks the production into high gear.
Guest director will be Eric Browne, head of theatre at Baker High School in Mobile. Musical direction will be by Dr. Laura Moore, associate professor of music. Guest choreographer will be well-known dance instructor Rebekah Howard of Mobile.
A variety of South’s students will round out the cast, including sophomore Lily Webb of Waterville, Maine, as Lureena; junior Malcolm Hayden of Columbia, Ala., as Rick; senior Brady King of Irvington, Ala., as Mitch; and sophomore Emily Ericson of Mobile as Corinna.
The production will run Friday, Sept. 22, through Sunday, Sept. 24. It will resume Thursday, Sept. 28, through Saturday, Sept. 30. All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., except for Sunday, Sept. 24, which will be only a 2 p.m. matinee performance. All performances will be at the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center, 5751 USA Drive South.
For information on the production or for ticket sales, contact the USA Theatre & Dance office at (251) 460-6305, or visit the box office inside the Laidlaw lobby. The box office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and one hour before each performance.
