South Goes Big for Local Teachers

The 秘密研究所 College of Education and Professional Studies and partnered with the Football Playoff Foundation to honor and celebrate teachers in Mobile and Baldwin counties during the 2024 Extra Yard for Teachers Week.
Extra Yard for Teachers is a nationwide celebration of educators. South Alabama鈥檚 celebration kicked off on Thursday, Sept. 12, as teachers and college faculty gathered to watch the Jaguar football team take on Northwestern State University at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
Not only were teachers given discount tickets for attending the game, but 27 of them were selected to have their Amazon classroom wish lists fulfilled. During the game, two $500 winners were selected: LaTara Lofton from Florence Howard Elementary School and Carmenita Pharr from Williamson High School. After the game, 25 additional teachers were awarded $200 to fulfill their Amazon wish lists.
鈥淎s a former math teacher, I am keenly aware of the crucial role that teachers play in shaping students鈥 lives,鈥 said Dr. Angela Barlow, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies at South. 鈥淭eachers invest considerable time and effort in supporting students鈥 personal growth. Extra Yard for Teachers is an opportunity to lift up these professionals and honor them for the phenomenal work they do. After all, teachers make all other professions possible.鈥
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Extra Yard for Teachers Big Reveal Day occurred at W. H. Leinkauf Elementary School in Mobile, where 550 students and 60 faculty and staff members received USA Jag swag, school supplies and a $1,000 gift certificate from DonorsChoose.org. In addition, Madeline Lester Price, a first-grade teacher at Leinkauf and a USA College of Education and Professional Studies alumna, received a $100 gift certificate from DonorsChoose.org. Principal Hope Belle-Payne accepted the 鈥渂ig check,鈥 while faculty and staff enjoyed fanfare provided by Jaguar cheerleaders, SouthPaw, Miss Pawla, football players and members of the Jaguar Marching Band.
鈥淥ur teachers and students in this great community need our support,鈥 said South Athletic Director Dr. Joel Erdmann. 鈥淎nd we are excited to partner and make this a special time of giving to the many dedicated teachers.鈥
