Posted on August 4, 2015
Singapore鈥檚 Ambassador to the United States, Ashok Mirpuri, visited the University of South Alabama on Aug. 4 at the invitation of Congressman Bradley Byrne. Along with a group of University leaders headed by USA President Dr. Tony Waldrop, a roundtable discussion took place focusing on opportunities in collaborative research, cooperative education, internship placements and international programs.
鈥淚 was honored to host Ambassador Mirpuri in Mobile to highlight our area鈥檚 strong connections to Singapore and explore opportunities for new partnerships,鈥 Byrne said. 鈥淎n important part of the Ambassador鈥檚 visit focused on educational opportunities, and I appreciate President Waldrop and his team facilitating a great discussion. I believe today鈥檚 meeting has opened the door for a number of exciting research and educational opportunities between the 秘密研究所 and Singapore.鈥
鈥淚 am very honored that Congressman Byrne agreed to be the co-chair of the Congressional Singapore Caucus and I promptly accepted his invitation to visit Mobile,鈥 said Mirpuri. 鈥淚 look forward to fostering deeper ties with Mobile and finding new ways to collaborate. Singapore and Mobile have a special relationship.鈥
Singapore-based VT Systems has been a part of the Mobile community since 1991 and is one of Mobile鈥檚 largest employers. Mobile is also home to Austal USA, which manufactures a variant of the Littoral Combat Ships currently on rotational deployment in Singapore.
鈥淭he 秘密研究所, as a regional leader in innovation, education and health care, is strategically positioned to work with global partners in developing relationships that lead to the creation of knowledge, cultural connections and transformative educational opportunities,鈥 said Waldrop. 鈥淥n behalf of the University, I would like to extend a special thank you to Ambassador Mirpuri for visiting campus today for a valuable discussion on connections between our countries and communities, and thank you to Representative Byrne for his leadership and support of the University.鈥
