Consultation and Outreach

Concerned about a student?

The professional staff of University Counseling & Wellness Center is available to consult with faculty, staff, and students regarding the psychological welfare of particular students. Our staff carries out consultations in person by appointment and by telephone (251) 460-7051. Please note that faculty and staff are permitted by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to disclose information about students to our counselors since they have a legitimate interest in the personal welfare of students enrolled in the University. Our staff can provide information about how to make a referral, how to communicate your concerns to the student, and what steps to take should the student refuse help.

If there is concern that a student might pose a threat of serious harm to himself/herself or others, faculty and staff should submit the student’s name to the University’s Behavioral Assessment Team. This team is composed of faculty and staff representatives and meets as needed to pull together and discuss relevant information and develop strategies to address these types of situations in a timely fashion. The Chair of this committee is Dr. Michael Mitchell, Vice-President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, and his telephone number is (251) 460-6172. Finally, if a student is viewed as an immediate threat to his/her safety or that of others, contact University Police at (251) 460-6312.
